故宫三大殿之一。
明永乐十八年（1420年）建，初名谨身殿，嘉靖时改名建极殿，清顺治时始称今名。
乾隆时重修。
平面长方形，黄琉璃筒瓦四角攒尖顶。
清时每年除夕和元宵，皇帝在此宴请王公贵族和京中的文武大臣。
乾隆后期（十八世纪末），成为殿试的场所。
